I was hired on paper to stand up a rigorous Test Directorate, which I did. But first, I was asked to scour the existing Systems design for gaps.​

After backfilling that role, I switched to stand up a fully automated "Truck-in-the-Loop" test facility.
​
Last, I served as a focal point to the commercial trucking OEM's looking to integrate autonomous driving into their vehicles.

My true claim to fame? Keeping the public safe!

Directorate Level (L7) Role
In this first part of a two-part assignment, I would stand up a formal Systems Engineering capability.
My responsibility was to help the Head of Systems Engineering & Test to build and integrate a new Systems Engineering Directorate into the existing Product, Safety, Autonomy Software, Program Management, and Quality teams, and prepare Systems Engineering for a full integration with the Test Directorate.

As the Director of Systems Engineering & Tooling, I would have full authority to reshape and build the team, tools, and processes required for success in preparation for the selection of and onboarding of a new Director.

Autonomously driving tractor+trailer trucks were already traveling down public highways with a Safety Driver as backup ready to take over at any moment.​

The Vice President of Engineering hired me to first apply my decades of engineering expertise to find any and all risks to letting the vehicle operate fully unmanned.
​
Like in many startups, formal Requirements Engineering practices had been bypassed to get to workable prototypes as quickly as possible, but now they were looking to commercially operate with our families on the highway.
​
This was the beginning of pullng the engineering teams and leadership through the formal Requirements + Design + Test trapline, a huge undertaking.
